Columbiaville Elementary School and the community came together for a truly memorable (and inspiring!) Title I Literacy Night centered around writing. Families, teachers, and friends filled the halls, buzzing with creativity as they worked side-by-side to create and illustrate their own stories—and even got to choose free books to take home and grow their personal libraries.
One of the highlights of the evening was hearing from local authors Charles Weaver, a retired Genesee County teacher, and Amanda Kay Hayes, a proud Columbiaville Elementary parent. Both shared their journeys as writers and left our students feeling inspired, confident, and excited to tell their own stories.
The event not only supported students’ growth as writers, but also showcased the incredible strength and heart of our school community. We are so grateful to our teachers and staff for guiding students through the writing process, and to our families for showing up, participating, and celebrating learning together.
Author Night was a joyful reminder that everyone has a story to tell—and an audience ready to listen. We can’t wait to continue nurturing a love of writing, creativity, and storytelling in all of our students!

We are proud to recognize Shelley Burkhardt for her outstanding dedication and leadership this school year. Shelley has gone above and beyond, balancing her regular responsibilities while also stepping in as lead teacher during a colleague’s maternity leave. She handled the added role with professionalism and grace, even while helping train a new lead teacher.

Amid numerous changes within the GSRP program—including staffing transitions and evolving support—Shelley consistently stepped in wherever needed to ensure her team felt supported and the program continued to run smoothly. Her steady leadership and commitment have helped position the GSRP program for continued growth and stability.

We are incredibly fortunate to have Shelley as a leader in our program and grateful for the positive impact she makes every day. Congratulations, Shelley, and thank you for your dedication!
