We are proud to recognize Shelley Burkhardt for her outstanding dedication and leadership this school year. Shelley has gone above and beyond, balancing her regular responsibilities while also stepping in as lead teacher during a colleague’s maternity leave. She handled the added role with professionalism and grace, even while helping train a new lead teacher.
Amid numerous changes within the GSRP program—including staffing transitions and evolving support—Shelley consistently stepped in wherever needed to ensure her team felt supported and the program continued to run smoothly. Her steady leadership and commitment have helped position the GSRP program for continued growth and stability.
We are incredibly fortunate to have Shelley as a leader in our program and grateful for the positive impact she makes every day. Congratulations, Shelley, and thank you for your dedication!

Erica Kovacs is our Alumni Spotlight for March!
Erica is a member of the graduating class of 1999. Erica became a single mom and entered the workforce after graduation. She later returned to school at a local community college, transferred to a four-year in-state university and completed her master’s degree out-of-state! Erica currently owns a small group practice located in Grand Blanc, MI called Sunshine Child and Adolescent Services, providing children, teens, and families mental and behavioral health services. She also works for the GISD, in a Behavioral Health program serving general education students across Genesee County.
Erica has two vibrant daughters and two strong stepsons all in young adulthood. She raised her daughters in South Mississippi, before moving her family back home to Genesee County. Erica’s parents still live here in Otter Lake. Erica and her husband George are learning to navigating life with adult children. They spend their time at the lake, camping, and gardening. They also frequent the Davison Farmers Market and hike the many trails around the area.
Erica’s favorite Falcon tradition was the Sugar Shack! She loved being involved and learning about making maple syrup! From tapping trees, to collecting buckets, to the boiling process. She is super proud to be a part of that.
Mrs. Elsie Pilvelich is Erica’s Favorite Falcon. Erica says that Mrs. Pilvelich supported her when her life was taking on a lot of changes. She didn't judge or give unsolicited advice. She was tough, but soft and supportive, everything Erica felt she needed during that time.
Erica participated in concert choir and received her varsity letter for her years of dedication. She made some of her closest friends in the choir that are still a significant part of her life today!
Erica’s advice to her young self: Growing up I always thought I wanted out of the country and live in the city. As, I've gotten older I have realized that the country is where my heart is. So my advice would be, go out and explore, challenge yourself, and try new things, but never forget where you came from.
