YOUR VOTE IS YOUR VOICE!

On August 4th, voters will be asked to decide on the millage that would be upheld for a duration of 10 years which begins in 2027. Here is some information about the millage.

* Will primary homeowners pay more?

No. This tax does NOT apply to your main home (your primary residence/homestead). It only applies to businesses, commercial properties, vacation homes, and rental properties.

* Is this a tax increase for those businesses/rental properties?

No. Even though the resolution asks to set the legal maximum limit higher (up to 19.8 mills), the district will only actually charge 18 mills. The higher limit acts as a cushion against state automatic tax-reduction laws (known as "Headlee rollbacks") so the school doesn't lose state funding later.

* What is the money for?

Day-to-day school operating expenses (like teacher salaries, textbooks, utilities, and supplies).

* Why does the school district need this?

Under Michigan law, public school districts are required to collect local taxes on non-home properties at a rate of 18 mills (which equals $18 for every $1,000 of assessed property value) to get their full state funding allowance per student.

* Who pays this tax?

Businesses, commercial property, second homes, and landlords. (NOT your primary home)

* What will actually be charged?

18 mills ($18 per $1,000 of value).

* Why does it say 19.8 mills on the ballot?

It gives the district a safety buffer so future inflation rules don't push the tax below the 18 mills needed for full state funding.

* How long will it last?

10 years (2027 to 2036).
